Masquerade

The State Small Theatre of Vilnius, Vilinius, Lithuania, 1997
Author: Mikhail Yurevich Lermontov
Directed by Rimas Tuminas

about the production

Lermontov's play is regarded as a top masterpiece of Russian romantic drama, however, the Director Rimas Tuminas presented it in a non-traditionaI tragicomical version. He consistently desolemnizes the situations and the characters , and subjects them to ironical mockery. He moved the plot from the interiors of the palaces onto the Petersburg streets by night, governed by a snowstorm, carnival rave, flirting and childish games by men and women… The Director Tuminas, in his stage production, subjects a so called romantic hero type to a critical attack.
