Tropical Elation

TR Warszawa (before Teatr Rozmaitości), Warsaw, Poland, 1997
Author: Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz
Directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna/ Grzegorz Horst d’Albertis/ Horst Leszczuk

about the production

The performance is based on the motifs of two Witkiewicz's works: Mister Price and New Liberation. lt is built  on  the  counterplay  of  black scenarios motifs full of crime and violence , and at the same time the black humour and cynism. The European culture is confronted with the ancient Asian cults, the scenes of violence in tropical elation are in contrast with boredom and emptiness, the music of Puccini and Donizzeti alternates Asian drums and hardrock music. All of this creates a picture of decaying Western civilization, of its shifting toward the self-destruction. The performance has already gained the reputation of the number one event on Warsawian stages in 1997.

Grzegorz Horst d'Albertis (born in 1968), before named Grzegorz Horst, and even before Grzegorz Jarzyna, and who knows what name will he adopt in the future to mystify his surrounding... Graduated from philosophy and drama directing arts at the State Drama Academy in Krakow, he once dealt as a tourist guide in Australia and Asia, and once as a mystifier...

His first steps followed those of Peter Brook and Jerzy Grotowski who had toured India, Nepal, Tibet and China. Afterwards he followed the traces of Witkiewicz and Malinowski left in Australia, Melanesia and Papua – New Guinea. And no other than the experience acquired during this voyage represent the matter of the Tropical Elation performance.
